A skin tag is skin growth on the skin. It looks like a small sack hanging from the skin. It’s soft and very common. It’s estimated that over half of all people get skin tags in their lives, and it may even be closer to 100 percent. They’re either flesh-colored or appear dark, often looking purplish. They often begin as small pin-sized bumps. Often, they’re only 2 millimeters to 5 millimeters in diameter. This is the equivalent of the size of one-third to one-half the size of an eraser. In some cases, they get as big as a grape or even a fig. This means they can get up to 1 centimeter to 5 centimeters in diameter. Some people only get one, but in other cases, the patient can get up to 100.
Men and women are equally prone to acquiring a skin tag. Those who are obese are more likely to develop skin tags.
Skin tags aren’t cancerous; they’re benign. In fact, they’re harmless. They don’t cause pain, itching or irritation in any way. They may cause the person to be self-conscious about their appearance. They may also get caught on clothing and become a nuisance.
Skin tags can occur anywhere, but they’re very common on the neck and armpits. It’s also common for them to develop on the eyelids and chest, especially under the chest of women. It’s even possible for skin tags to arise on the penis and vagina.
Some people are born with them; however, most people develop them as adults. Hormone elevations like those that occur during pregnancy may heighten a person’s chances of developing them. Some diseases cause them such as acathosis nigricans.
They’re either removed with sterile scissors, frozen or burnt off or are removed with a laser.
