What is PRP?

Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is blood that has been enriched with extra platelets. Blood normally contains platelets because they’re needed for clotting, but platelets also contain growth factors, which are essential proteins needed for the healing. It turns out that when PRP is injected into injured tissue, it can potentially speed up the healing process.

PRP is primarily being used for scarring, rejuvenation, and hairloss.

What is PRP microneedling?

Microneedling is an advanced skin-tightening procedure that uses thin needles to make small punctures in your skin. The gentle needle pricks trigger the healing process, which in turn tells your body to produce more collagen. This extra collagen naturally tightens and lifts skin, which improves skin tone, reduces surface scarring, and diminishes fine lines and wrinkles.

PRP is applied to your skin just before microneedling, then during the procedure, the needles deliver PRP down into the puncture sites. The platelet-rich plasma is quickly absorbed into the area, where it accelerates healing and ultimately improves the overall result. PRP is made from a small amount of your own blood, so you don’t need to worry about blood safety. Dr. Pothiawala also performs microneedling without PRP, so you have two microneedling options.

When use for hairloss, PRP is injected directly into the scalp.  It can also be injected directly into facial skin in lieu of or in conjunction with fillers to enhance an antiaging procedure.  

What can you expect after PRP microneedling?

Expect the procedure to take about 1 hour total, which includes 30 minutes of actual microneedling. Most patients have mild redness in the treated area and may need to plan for up to 3 days of downtime while skin heals.
