Eczema Q & A

What Is Eczema?

Eczema, also known as dermatitis, is a skin condition that causes inflammation that looks like a rash in some cases. It often appears as if it’s dry or crusty. Sometimes, it will ooze or have fluid-filled bumps. It’s usually manageable, but it’s sometimes difficult to treat. Patients should know that it’s a common condition, affecting more than 30 million Americans.

Does It Cause Any Symptoms?

In most cases, it’s itchy or doesn’t cause any symptoms. It may be embarrassing for the patient and a nuisance.

What Causes It?

People usually develop it at birth. Neither gender is more susceptible to it. People who have a family history of eczema tend to be more prone to it. Those who have family members with asthma, hay fever or other allergies are more at risk for developing it.

Is Eczema an Allergy?

Eczema isn’t an allergy. However, it’s a condition that may be triggered by allergens such as laundry detergent, mold, pollen or animal dander. Heat and emotional stress have a tendency to cause flare-ups.

Is It a Lifelong Condition?

Children usually develop it by the time they’re only a few months old. One in 10 children get it, but a majority of them outgrow it by the time they’re teenagers.

How Is It Treated?

Dr. Grover will treat it using a topical corticosteroid. These steroid creams aren’t the same type of steroid used by professional athletes to enhance their muscles. The physician may prescribe a high dose of steroids to treat the problem in worse cases. Antihistamines may be used to reduce the itching or even prevent flare-ups. The physician may even recommend some self-care that the patient can do at home such as applying a cold cloth to the site to ease discomfort. Dr. Grover may also recommend the patient change soaps or laundry detergents and switch to unscented options.
